At Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, Forest School provides children with opportunities to learn, explore and succeed in a natural outdoor environment. It offers a valuable learning experience beyond the traditional classroom, helping children to develop confidence, resilience and independence while enjoying the benefits of the outdoors.

Through a range of practical and engaging activities, children are encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world. Forest School promotes creativity, self-esteem and motivation, while also fostering respect for each other and the environment.

We are fortunate to have extensive outdoor grounds, including trees, planting areas, a pond and grassed spaces, which provide an ideal setting for Forest School sessions to take place on site.

Forest School at Our Lady of the Rosary

Each class participates in Forest School for one term each year, with sessions taking place weekly throughout the term. Forest School forms part of the Outdoor and Adventurous Activity element of the Physical Education curriculum and takes place in all but the most extreme weather conditions.

Sessions are led by Mrs Bridge, who plans a range of activities designed to help children develop practical skills, confidence and a love of outdoor learning.

Activities may include:

• Exploring the natural environment
• Team-building and cooperative games
• Nature-based investigations
• Creative outdoor projects
• Safe use of tools under adult supervision
• Developing problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Learning about risk assessment and personal responsibility

What Should Children Wear?

To ensure that children are comfortable, safe and able to participate fully, it is important that they come to Forest School dressed appropriately for the weather and outdoor conditions.

Children should wear:

• Wellington boots or walking boots
• A waterproof coat with a hood
• Old trousers suitable for outdoor activities
• A long-sleeved T-shirt or sweatshirt
• A warm hat and gloves during colder months
• A sun hat during warmer weather

The school can provide waterproof over-trousers for children to wear during sessions. However, if your child has their own waterproof clothing, they are welcome to bring this to school.
