History
At Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, we aim to inspire children's curiosity about the past and help them develop an understanding of how history has shaped the world in which we live today. Through engaging lessons and memorable experiences, pupils learn to think critically, ask questions and evaluate evidence as young historians.
In Key Stage One, children are introduced to History through the study of significant people and events, such as Florence Nightingale and The Great Fire of London. They develop their understanding of the past by exploring photographs, artwork, artefacts and historical sources, as well as listening to stories, comparing different periods of time and sequencing events chronologically.
As children progress into Key Stage Two, they develop a deeper understanding of British and world history through the study of a range of periods and civilisations, including:
- The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age
- Ancient Egypt
- The Ancient Maya Civilisation
- Ancient Greece
- The Victorian Era
Pupils also explore local history, investigating how their local area has changed over time, from the Roman period through to the history of our own school and community.
We believe that history comes alive through first-hand experiences. Children have opportunities to visit museums, historical sites and places of interest, enriching their classroom learning and deepening their understanding of the past. We also welcome visitors into school who lead workshops, performances and interactive learning experiences linked to historical topics.
History is celebrated across the school through a variety of special events, including:
- Museum in the Classroom
- Archaeological Digs
These events provide valuable opportunities for children to share their learning and engage with parents and carers. We warmly welcome contributions from family members and members of the community who wish to share their own historical knowledge, experiences and expertise with our pupils.
